教員インタビュー

Q1 学生時代の思い出や打ち込んだことについて教えてください。
I went to a small liberal arts college in the United States--in many ways similar to Seisen University, except that it was a men’s college.  There, I was able to explore a wide range of subjects and I changed my direction of study from the sciences to literature and the arts. As a member of my college’s choral group, I joined a singing tour that brought me to Japan for a week. That positive experience, along with my studies of Japanese literature and culture, led to my coming to live in Japan. After college I worked for a few years with an NGO group, and then I came to Japan to live. I went to graduate school in Japan and studied literature, culture, and translation, which have now become the focus of my study and work as a teacher at Seisen.
Q2 先生が、ご自身の専門に取り組むようになったきっかけを教えてください。
I have always been interested in the relationships between people, nature, and culture. Japanese haiku, and works like Matsuo Basho’s “Narrow Road to the Deep North (松尾芭蕉の奥の細道) attracted me to studying Japanese literature; especially its nature-oriented literature.  In Japan I joined an academic study group named the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (日本文学・環境学会)in order to develop my studies in this field. Through these activities I met the Japanese environmental writer Ishimure Michiko (石牟礼道子) and was asked to help translate her writing. This became the start of my translation work; a long learning process that has led to my teaching translation at Seisen.
Q3 研究テーマの魅力や面白さはどのようなところにありますか。
Translation helps to build bridges of understanding between people of different languages and cultures.  Translators are “word ambassadors” who help us widen our access to, and share the literature and thoughts of people and cultures around the world. Translators also take part in the creative spirit of writing.  We “bring to life” words and literature in new languages and places. I believe that--hopefully--translation and translators can contribute to world understanding  and peace.

アレン先生

Q4 学生へのメッセージをお願いいたします。
Enjoy looking at the world of nature outside and around us. Learn from it. And, also, enjoy the world of studying with books and computers and teachers “inside” and at school.  Learn from these worlds “outside” and “inside”.  Use your head and your heart in learning.  Share what you learn with others to help make a better world.
